Reflections on very long discussions about PLE vs. LMS

#PLENK 2010

I’am first who thinks that about these topics it is discussed much more than it is done???

Therefore it is already too much I will add my point of view. Let’s start mortal combat PLE vs. LMS. Let’s raise bets!

As I am bad classmate I just read Anderson and Panel discussion. Do not offend others I will read “later”.

1 st round.

Deep in my heart I am pure physicist. Also my profession it states too. If we see a problem or want to compare statements, first of all we divide that problem to the basics, roots of forbidden fruit. So talking about Personall Learning Environment and Learning Management Systems why we even need them? To make our younger community learn better faster easier from older community experiences. In other words to put information into our brains. So let’s back to the basics – we discuss in which way is better to get information and which information. Let’s make assumption that skills, abilities and other things that you can bring from the school is information in this case (we physicists like to do that in exercises)

For the first round PLE attacks with

  • Many examples of using information practically from different point of views. We, very different people, tend to not understand everyone, except with similar experiences. We can easily pump information from person we like. It’s like magic spark.
  • Push of society to try by yourself or contribute information and share to others. As we know from early days from human history, in order to make information stuck in our head, we need not only read, listen, watch but most importantly do, do and one more time do.
  • Unexpected opportunities. When you have very big social network you can accidentally get  solution to your long stuck problem.
  • Tons of info. Depends on situation if it is a problem for saving time or it is life-saver for emerging fields.

For the first round LMS defends with

  • Concreted matured information. It is easy to choose the right blocks of information and easily consume. It not only saves your time but also protects you from hoaxes, unintentional lies.
  • Gives problems before you even imagined they exist. If I would want to become scientist from early age I do not know from where to start. Sometimes you need to be told to try to push very hard info into your head. Information that you did not choose. Maybe one time from 20 you will be successful and find the path of your career. The same rule goes here – try.

Summary PLE attacked very vigorously but LMS small old defend was stable as rocks. It depends on situation – on emerging fields, or rapidly changing fields or there are a little bit experienced participants is better to use PLE, on other field LMS. So which is winner of this round should choose four corner arbiters – which fields are more?

Round 2.

Let’s go to the ground. Every one has it’s own system how he is learning therefore the winner should be which one is more adaptable. It is sad that at this moment we have many separated technologies, but society need full system. So at this point there is not much discussion. Another point  Clint Smith stated is change management. It matters where do we see more changes. Ageing society needs to update IT skills. Young children after playing long hours nasty pretty video games needs to go to school and look at unsightly LMS. In both ways it is a need much investment in technology. On other hand while most important decisions will be made by the that part of ageing society the winner here is LMS.

Final round

Politics. Policies etc. Very great list advanteges and disadvanteges by Anderson. In short words much more is done with LMS, but PLE has much greater opportunity.

It is hard to choose the winner, and I personally think there is no need for. Why we can not create a mixture of these two?.. Maybe something I do not understand.

First day and late for #PLENK2010

Hi everyone!

I’m new classmate on edublogs. I really enjoy joining this community. So let’s get starting communicating. I do not understand very much, it takes long time while information reaches my grey brain cells and much longer it is processing there, therefore I will ask many questions and swamp you into interestind discussions.
